Matthew D. Fischer B.A. L.L.B.

Since 2004 Matthew’s practice has been focused on Strata Law, broadly construed; including governance, finances, compliance, civil litigation, dispute resolution, and any issues which can and do arise in relation to condominium style property ownership. As a result, he has developed considerable experience assisting all kinds of strata corporations, owners, tenants and management companies with legal services and dispute resolution.

Having appeared in all levels of Court in British Columbia, Matthew has conducted a wide variety formal adjudication proceedings and negotiations on behalf of his clients, including complex multi-party strata proceedings and litigation dealing with property use, repairs, bylaw enforcement, collections, governance, and actions for damages.

Matthew also assists clients with preparation and interpretation of bylaws and agreements, advises on governance, financial, repair and administrative issues, assists with conduct of meetings, financial management, division of expenses and a wide range of other issues.

Applying his experience, education, creativity and logic, Matthew addresses complex problems and issues, and finds satisfaction in assisting his clients with effective, practical and creative solutions to their legal issues.

Matthew was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 2002 after completing his Bachelor of Laws in 2001 at the University of British Columbia. He regularly participates in courses and workshops relating to strata property, advanced advocacy and alternative dispute resolution in the form of arbitration or tribunal proceedings.

He has written for various publications and spends a considerable amount of time educating lawyers, managers and members of the public on various nuances of strata property law and practice. Recent educational activities include:

  • Returning instructor, contributor and panel member for the strata law sessions offered by the Continuing Legal Education Society
  • Principal Author of the forthcoming Ethics Chapter for the Strata Property Practice Manual for the Continuing Legal Education Society.
  • Frequent instructor for various seminars presented on strata related issues for the Condominium Home Owners’ Association (CHOA), Professional Association of Managing Agents, and other local, regional and provincial organizations.
  • Author or contributor of articles for a variety of publications and newsletters.
